This Week in Tiger Stadium History, May 18-24

George Kell came to the Tigers in a trade with the Philadelphia Athletics.

May 18, 1968 at Tiger Stadium: Washington’s Frank Howard becomes only the second player to hit a ball over the left-field roof. Howard’s home run comes off Mickey Lolich.

May 18, 1982 at Tiger Stadium: After homering in his final at-bat against Minnesota two days earlier, Larry Herndon extends his home run streak to four with blasts in the first, third, and fifth innings against Oakland.

May 19, 1968 at Tiger Stadium: Al Kaline’s pinch-hit home run off Washington’s Steve Jones is the 307th of his career, allowing him to pass Hank Greenberg as the Tigers’ all-time leader.

May 21, 1967 at Tiger Stadium: Future Hall of Famer Whitey Ford pitches his final major league game, leaving the game with a sore elbow after pitching the first inning. The Yankees southpaw announced his retirement a week later.

May 23, 1969 at Tiger Stadium: Mickey Lolich breaks Paul Foytack’s 1956 club record with 16 strikeouts in a 6-3 win over California.

May 24, 1946 at Briggs Stadium: While the Philadelphia Athletics are in town for a series, Connie Mack trades third baseman George Kell to Detroit for center fielder Barney McCosky.
